In our collaboration with ILTEK, we visited St. Francis Children’s Home in Miaoli to conduct three hands-on workshops we had designed for children aged 6 to 12. These workshops were not just about DIY activities, but also about teaching them fundamental concepts of physics and mechanics. Through simple, engaging, and playful methods, we helped the children learn while having fun.
The first workshop was about building solar-powered cars. We began by introducing the concept of energy conversion, using various analogies and imaginative explanations to help the children understand what energy really is. Then came the hands-on activity: some children worked quickly, while others moved at a slower pace. For those who fell behind, we offered extra support and helped with the parts that were too challenging for them to complete alone. For those who finished early, we encouraged them to think outside the box—not just following the instructions step by step, but adding their own ideas and making improvements to their creations. Once the cars were completed, we took the children outdoors, where their handmade solar cars raced under the bright summer sun.
In the second and third workshops, we introduced concepts related to magnetism and pressure, including ideas such as contact forces and non-contact forces. During the lessons, we sometimes noticed that the children had difficulty understanding what was being explained—perhaps because the material was too advanced, or because our explanations were not clear enough. In such cases, we used visuals and vivid analogies to help them grasp the ideas, and we removed overly complex content to keep the lessons accessible. The instructors also incorporated interactive elements throughout the sessions, ensuring that every child had a chance to participate. They were encouraged to share their thoughts freely—whether right or wrong—so that everyone felt engaged and confident in expressing themselves.
